The top 3 states were Massachusetts, Washington and Oregon, each with usage over 60% higher than the average. The West Coast was consistently above the mean while the rest of the country showed very little consistency by region. We also looked at how the 50 states ranked in terms of growth from 2009 to 2010.

This study group was segmented into four geographic regions resembling a typical sales organization as shown below. West region : Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. There were also far more top performers in the West region as well.

Early in my career, my territory consisted of 1/3 of the state of Oregon. The size of the territory was bigger than territory in 4 other states I covered driving my company-supplied Buick. During my time counting cattle in Eastern Oregon on my drives, I came to the conclusion I don’t play well alone.

Maybe I’m thinking too far ahead of Oregon State, but I’m a little worried about Oklahoma State, who I think we’ll run into in the second round. Not only weird year because it’s all going to be played in one state, you don’t have those great sort of regional sort of games. No Duke, no Kentucky.
